Ricciardo slots into third, just ahead of Vettel, before Hamilton vaults to the top with a 1m34.179s effort on softs, that's two tenths quicker than Bottas's medium effort.
Vandoorne nicks ahead of Alonso to go fourth fastest for McLaren, as Hamilton tries again.
Verstappen goes second for Red Bull on soft tyres, 0.364s down on Bottas.
Hamilton and Vettel both locked up heavily at the Turn 4 hairpin on their flying laps.
Bottas takes Mercedes to the top now. 1m34.387s on mediums, well over a second quicker than the Force India.
Both were on softs. Only Williams has elected to use the qualifying tyre early on.
Perez on top now as the times keep tumbling. He's the first into the 1m35s, 0.167s clear of Alonso, who follows across the timing line.
Sirotkin's Williams is the first ultrasoft runner to set a time. Three tenths off Hulkenberg's soft effort.
The Renaults leap to the top of the times now, with Hulkenberg fastest on 1m36.014s.
"We have an issue Kimi, box". Ferrari off to a bad start as Raikkonen is wheeled back into the garage with a problem.
But he is immediately deposed by Ericsson's Sauber on 1m36.620s.
Hartley goes quickest for Toro Rosso, 0.122s quicker than Grosjean.
Grosjean improves to a 1m36.830s best on his second flying lap on that set of tyres.
Gasly completes the set with a 1m38.133s as Hartley, Ericsson, Hulkenberg and Leclerc join the action.
Replays show a few oversteer moments for Grosjean on that lap. The track is not properly gripped up yet.
Grosjean gets us rolling with a 1m36.927s lap. Magnussen is seven tenths down using the harder tyre.
Grosjean flashes past the pits to start a flying lap as Verstappen climbs into his car.
Gasly's Toro Rosso joins the two Haas on track for some early running.
It's currently 18C at the Shanghai Circuit, with a 20C track temperature - much colder than in Bahrain last weekend. There's a 40% chance of rain in this session, though it's not particularly cloudy at the moment. The smog makes it difficult to tell to be honest.
