Debate over super-soft strategy at McLaren, Alonso tried for a time on the first lap, Button favours warming it more first.
Hamilton finally pulls off a clean lap and goes fastest.
Race control now expects rain at 2.30pm local time, so less than a quarter of an hour.
Of the top 10 runners, only Ricciardo and Massa are out on track.
Twitter
"OOOFFF!!!" is Mercedes Twitter's assessment of that Hamilton kerb flight. Accurate summary.

4 Kvyat
5 Ricciardo
6 Grosjean
7 Hulkenberg
8 Perez
9 Massa

Hamilton slid off at the last chicane again all by himself this time, and crashed spectacularly over the high kerbs. He avoided the wall.
Hamilton is through after setting two purple sectors, but he got the final chicane all wrong and only moves up to 14th.
Hamilton is down in 18th after locking up on is first run on the super-soft, it all feels a bit fraught in the Mercedes team as they struggle to get in a qualifying lap before the rain is due, in around 15 minutes.

"Did you hit anything or was it just a puncture?" Force India asks Hulkenberg. "I didn't hit anything," he insists.
Hulkenberg and his punctured super-soft make it back into the pitlane.
Hulkenberg is limping down the back straight with a left-rear puncture on his Force India.
Raikkonen is on another good lap, he goes second by 0.006s behind Vettel.
The Finn has struggled to match his team-mate on one lap pace this year but that's a great effort.

Hamilton asks Mercedes has his pace was looking. "Good" is the answer.
LAWRENCE BARRETTO: "Sebastian Vettel's leading time of 1m16.304s is still two tenths slower than the quickest lap in this session last year, set by Lewis Hamilton."
Teams are expecting rain at 2.35pm local time. That means 25 action-packed minutes now then... less action for 55 minutes.
Vettel pits. The sky seems to be becoming duller by the second.
The skies are certainly a rain-is-imminent colour. Pretty heavy and grey.
Only Hamilton and Max Verstappen sit in the pits with the rest of the cars on track.
Rain is expected in 26 minutes, and Hamilton comes out on the super-softs.
Rain is expected in 26 minutes, and Hamilton comes out on the super-softs.
"Rain is imminent," Mercedes tells Hamilton as it puts him onto super-softs.
Now some debate between Rosberg and his engineer over whether to go for a flying lap on the first, second or third lap on super-softs.
Quote
Rosberg reports "a lot of bouncing down the main straight. It feels strange". Mercedes calls him in for a tyre and wing change anyway.
Grosjean was on a slow lap and turned in on the racing line as Hamilton closed on him, prompting the Mercedes to lock up, jink and go off.
Hamilton is still on the harder soft tyre, but Rosberg has switched to the super-softs.
Hamilton has to veer wildly across the final chicane run-off when he comes across a Lotus moving slowly.
Stevens has had a couple of little trips off at chicanes already in this session, reports race control's watchful computer.
Raikkonen goes second, must have dropped time to team-mate Vettel in the final sector there.
Raikkonen has set purple first and second sectors on his way to a decent lap.
Rosberg jumps into second with a 1m17.215s, but that's 0.681s off Vettel.
Stopwatch
Vettel pops in a 1m16.534s, the first significantly quick time of the day.
Hamilton reports a vibration on his first set of tyres. Mercedes is "looking into it".
Force India has joined the Ferraris on the super-soft tyre. That's significant as many in the paddock are tipping Force India for a one stop strategy on Sunday.
Ferrari clearly wants to make sure it gets super-soft mileage just in case rain arrives early. Vettel should easily be quickest early on.
BEN ANDERSON: "We're told there is a 70 per cent chance of rain in this session, so everyone will want to get as much running in as they can early on. Already we have all but Ricciardo and Grosjean on circuit."
Providing the cars don't pile back into the pits at the end of this lap, Vettel will be the first to set a flier next lap.
Vettel is already on the softer super-soft tyre.

Green flag
Rosberg and Vettel are lined up side by side at the bottom of the pits. There's quite a queue gathering there.
The green flag is out and we are go.

The general consensus among teams in FP1 was that the evening practice would be dry but it could rain towards the second half of the session.
That could mean a very busy track for the first half of FP2.
That could mean a very busy track for the first half of FP2.
If you joined us earlier, the weather looks very similar, it's dull and overcast, the only difference now being the ominous dark clouds floating towards the track.
Track temperature has risen to 32 degrees since FP1, with humidity decreasing to 61 per cent from 70 per cent.
We should see some long runs and extensive use of the option tyre, which we had none of earlier.
