We are set for an interesting strategy-based race. Join us tomorrow for all the action from Monza.
So, at the end of all that we have an interesting grid for tomorrow's race. The Red Bull duo up front with Hulkenberg's Sauber the fly in the ointment.
Hulkenberg was mighty in the final sector - only Vettel was quicker.
Vettel clambers onto the scales and he is studying the timing monitor intently, gathering information on his competitors' segment times.
Rosberg ended up sixth with Ricciardo dropping down to seventh, Perez eighth, Button ninth and Vergne 10th.
So at the end it is Vettel who tops the lot with Webber alongside, Hulkenberg a fine third, Massa fourth and Alonso only fifth.
One or two drivers backed off slightly - it cost Webber - but then the dust started to clear and others further down the road could continue
Meanwhile, Alonso was frustrated by Massa's pace on that final run. If the slipstream tactic was planned, it failed spectacularly.
Quote
Rocky to Vettel: “P1 mate, good job.” Vettel: “Yahoo!”
Might that be just what Hulkenberg needs to boost a difficult season with Sauber?
A scrappy end to the session, caused when Vergne took a huge run through the gravel at the end of his final lap.
Huge effort from Hulkenberg, whose weekend started with great difficulty. That Sauber's barely been near Q3 all season.
Sebastian Vettel claims a superb pole position for tomorrow's Italian Grand Prix at Monza!
Perez beats team-mate Button to eighth. 1m24.502s for the Mexican against 1m24.515s for the Brit. Very close.
Stopwatch
It's Vettel once again who improves slightly as the dust clears with a magnificent 1m23.755s lap.
But Hulkenberg beats both Ferraris! P3 on a 1m24.065s.
Alonso comes through in 1m24.142s...
Webber comes through and is second as Vergne kicks up a load of dust exiting Parabolica.
Massa is third on a 1m24.132s, he beats Alonso!
Alonso a shade slower than his team-mate as they approach Parabolica.
Massa flying on this lap, he's level with Webber at present.
The session has ended. Drivers already on a timed lap may complete it.
