Lap 12: Above the circuit, it has now turned much more overcast and showers continue to approach the principality.
Lap 11: Senna in 10th is 2.1s behind Hulkenberg, with di Resta holding onto 11th, Ricciardo 12th, Kovalainen 13th and Button in 14th.
Lap 11: Webber again takes the best lap of the day but Rosberg is just five thousandths slower and still only 1.4 seconds behind.
Lap 11: The stewards have declared that no action will be taken against those drivers who moved to the inside at the first corner.
Lap 9: Back with the survivors and positions are static for the moment. Senna continues to lose ground behind ninth placed Hulkenberg.
Lap 9: Webber clocks the fastest lap at a 1m20.969s, with his pace almost matched by several of the leading runners.
Lap 9: The day appears to be over for Kobayashi. Sauber has retired the car.
Lap 8: Meanwhile, race control has announced that several cars are under investigation for cutting the first corner on the opening lap.
Lap 8: @OfficialSF1Team: "@kamui_kobayashi in the box. Checking the car again after his massive 'air walk'!"
Lap 8: This is a long stop for Kobayashi - his second visit to the pits already this afternoon - and it doesn't look good.
Lap 8: The Ferrari pair are tightly bunched in fourth and fifth, with Massa keeping Alonso on his toes over the opening laps.
Lap 7: Button remains down in 14th, behind Kovalainen, as Kobayashi comes into the pits again.
Lap 7: Button is told on the McLaren team radio that he is the third runner on the road using the soft tyre, so is advised to make them last.
Lap 7: Webber is clocked a second out front from Rosberg, who is comfortably matching the leader's pace in these opening stages.
Lap 6: Hulkenberg in ninth is also on the back of that group, with Senna (10th) just beginning to lose a little bit of ground.
Lap 6: Raikkonen, seventh, and Schumacher, eighth, are right with Vettel
Lap 5: Glock is 15th, followed by Pic 16th, Vergne losing out badly in 17th, Perez 18th, Karthikeyan 19th, Kobayashi 20th and Petrov in 21st.
Lap 5: Behind Senna we have di Resta 11th, Ricciardo 12th and then Kovalainen well up in 13th. Button is behind the Finn in 14th spot.
Lap 5: Vettel is keeping an eye on the Ferraris from sixth but will be happy with his move up the order on a possible alternate strategy.
Lap 4: Petrov is into the pits from 21st position and is back underway after a lengthy stop.
Lap 4: @OfficialSF1Team: "Unlucky start for @kamui_kobayashi - puncture. Comes to garage for check!"
Lap 4: Webber is away up front, tailed by Rosberg in his Mercedes while Hamilton has shaken off the challenge of Alonso.
Lap 4: Alonso gives chase to Hamilton through the final corner but the McLaren is holding the Ferrari off for the moment.
Lap 4: Kobayashi was another casualty on the first lap. The Japanese was into the pits but remains on the lead lap.
Lap 4: The safety car comes into the pitlane and we are racing once again.
Lap 3: Behind the leaders, Vettel is sixth with Raikkonen seventh, Schumacher eighth, Hulkenberg ninth and Senna up to 10th.
Lap 3: Hamilton is disappointed by his slow start but has maintained third, ahead of the rapid-starting Ferrari pair.
Lap 3: Webber leads into the third lap from Rosberg, Hamilton, Alonso, Massa, Vettel, Raikkonen and Schumacher.
Lap 3: Schumacher couldn't avoid contact with the Lotus and Grosjean was sent spinning into an instant retirement.
Lap 2: Replays of the start show that Grosjean moved across, bouncing into Alonso's Ferrari, which sent him across the track and into the path of Schumacher.
Lap 2: Something of a delay bringing the field under caution, but the pack is now being controlled during the clean-up of that first lap smash.
Lap 2: De la Rosa is coming into the pits without a rear wing.
Lap 2: Maldonado is also in the wall at Loews hairpin, as Grosjean's Lotus is pulled away by the marshals.
Lap 2: Massa is fifth ahead of Vettel in sixth, all profiting from the spin and elimination of Grosjean on the run down to the first corner.
Lap 1: Grosjean is involved in the incident approaching Ste. Devote, having spun sideways just after the lights.
Lap 1: Racing down to the sea front for the first time it is Webber from Rosberg, Hamilton and Alonso who all escape the chaos behind.
Lap 1: Webber gets away much better than Rosberg but we have a crash approaching Turn 1.
