Lap 7: Great move from Perez there at the hairpin and Hamilton has no response.
Lap 7: Schumacher has also passed Glock and takes over 14th position.
Lap 7: Perez goes for wild dive down the inside of Hamilton's McLaren and amazingly makes it stick.
Lap 6: Grosjean and Senna have both passed Karthikeyan's HRT. The Indian drops down to 20th place.
Lap 6: Vettel now leads by three seconds from home hero Kobayashi.
Lap 6: DRS is now enabled, with Perez drawing closer to Hamilton as they flash across the line.
Lap 6: Kovalainen holds onto 11th for this lap but has a huge queue of cars all over the back of him.
Lap 6: Hulkenberg got up to eighth amid the early carnage and is right with the Hamilton/Perez scrap.
Lap 6: Karthikeyan is 18th with the recovering drivers coming up behind him. Grosjean is 19th with Senna 20th, Pic 21st and Webber 22nd.
Lap 5: Vergne is 12th and di Resta lost out, dropping to 13th, ahead of Glock 14th, Schumacher 15th, de la Rosa 16th and Petrov 17th.
Lap 5: Perez is getting a look at his future seat and is right behind Hamilton's car as he looks to recover from that first corner scrape.
Lap 5: Unbelievable position changes from this. Maldonado is ninth with Ricciardo up to 10th and Kovalainen an amazing 11th.
Lap 4: Vettel leads by 1.9 seconds at the end of the first full racing lap with Button now harrying Kobayashi, tailed by Massa and Raikkonen.
Lap 4: Grosjean then went on the attack at Turn 2 and nudged into Webber, sending the Australian into a spin. Both required a visit to the pits.
Lap 4: Hamilton is ahead of Perez now in sixth and needs to progress to take advantage of Alonso's costly elimination.
Lap 4: So it's Vettel from Kobayashi, Button, Massa and Raikkonen as they race around a lap.
Lap 4: Replays show that Alonso's left rear touched lightly against Raikkonen's right front as they took the line for the first corner.
Lap 3: Raikkonen forces the issue and Perez has to run wide, dropping down the order.
Lap 3: This is like a GP2 race and the drivers are really going at it - certainly no caution from them today as the title race gets more tense.
Lap 3: Vettel streaks away up front as Button looks to challenge but it's a battle behind as Perez and Raikkonen go wheel-to-wheel.
Lap 3: This changes everything in the world championship. If Vettel can win this race and Alonso doesn't score, there could be just four points in it!
Lap 3: The safety car comes into the pitlane and we are racing once again.
Lap 2: An explosive start to the race and extreme repercussions for the championship. The field is already up to the 130R as they get ready for the restart.
Lap 2: Button cut through the carnage and is back up to his qualifying spot of third as we head towards the restart.
Lap 2: Webber pits the Red Bull and the crew change him onto hard tyres. He gets away.
Lap 2: Still waiting for replays of that first corner drama which has huge implications for the points standings.
Lap 2: Senna is also in for a new nose and he rejoins at the back of the field.
Lap 2: Grosjean pits the Lotus and the front wing is being changed.
Lap 1: Webber was also involved in the melee and he has dropped all the way down to 22nd position.
Lap 1: Vettel forms up behind the big Mercedes tailed by Kobayashi, Button, Massa, Raikkonen, Perez, Hamilton and Hulkenberg.
Lap 1: This does huge damage to his points lead and the Spaniard is already storming back to the Ferrari garage.
Lap 1: Rosberg is also out of the race and he climbs out of the car. Alonso is out of the race!
Lap 1: But there are problems behind and Alonso has spun at the first corner!
Lap 1: Down to the hairpin for the first time it is Vettel from Kobayashi and Button as carnage sets in behind.
Lap 1: Vettel gets away extremely well and Kobayashi is through into second place ahead of Webber into the first corner.
The grid is now all set. We are ready for 53 racing laps this afternoon. We await the lights...
But many of them have held back and there are large gaps, as the drivers head to the grid.
