Lap 3: So Alonso leads the pack with Vettel second, Hamilton third, Schumacher fourth, Massa fifth and Button sixth.
Lap 3: So Button is the big loser off the start, falling from third on the grid to sixth as they line up for the restart.
Lap 2: D'Ambrosio is out of the race as his Virgin entry is too badly damaged.
Lap 2: Senna comes into the pits from what is 17th position. He rejoins.
Lap 2: Barrichello had nowhere to go and was also caught up in the incident. He managed to get going again and pitted for a new nose, rejoining at the back.
Lap 2: Onboard Alonso shows total bravery from the Spaniard as he cut across the grass en route to the lead by the entry to the chicane.
Lap 2: Liuzzi then slid sideways and slammed into Petrov and Rosberg, who were side-by-side in the chute between Turns 1 and 2.
Lap 2: Replays of the start show hefty wheelspin from Vettel, with Alonso diving into the lead as the Red Bull man defended from Hamilton.
Lap 2: Liuzzi initiated the accident, losing control of his HRT way before Turn 1.
Lap 2: Kobayashi and d'Ambrosio have also been into the pits from repairs.
Lap 2: Williams awaits Barrichello and the Brazilian makes it back into the pits for a new front wing.
Lap 2: Schumacher has now allowed Hamilton back past as the crowd cheers wildly at Alonso's lead into lap 2.
Lap 1: Heavy damage to Petrov's Renault and Liuzzi's HRT as the marshals begin recovering the accident.
Lap 1: Forming up behind the big Mercedes is Alonso from Vettel, Schumacher, Hamilton, Massa, Button and Webber.
Lap 1: Ricciardo stalled at the start and is pushed into the pitlane by the marshals.
Lap 1: Contact in the midfield. Rosberg is involved with Liuzzi, Petrov and Barrichello.
Lap 1: Incredible start from Alonso as he leads Vettel down to the second chicane from Hamilton and Schumacher.
Lap 1: Vettel drops the hammer but it's a poor start! Alonso jumps both Vettel and Hamilton to lead into the first chicane.
The grid is set and we are ready for 53 laps of combat this afternoon. We await the lights ...
The drivers peel off into their grid positions at the last moment. The front few rows are in position.
Air horns blast all around the course as Vettel turns for home and brings the field into line behind him.
Out of the Ascari bends and Vettel begins to slow the pack down as he weaves his way towards Parabolica.
Out of Roggia and the pack sweeps through the two Lesmo right-handers and begin the run to Ascari.
All 24 cars leave the grid as Vettel exits the first chicane and blasts through the Curva Grande.
The formation lap begins at Monza. Vettel leads the field of 24 away from the dummy grid.
Felipe Massa receives some last-minute instructions from his race engineer Rob Smedley. Tension everywhere on the grid this afternoon.
Webber puts on his gloves and composes himself, while team-mate Vettel closes his eyes to focus on the start.
Ambient temperature is up to 29 Celsius, with the track sizzling nicely at 41 degrees with just a few minutes to go.
Mark Webber receives a final good luck message and some words of advice from Dr. Helmut Marko. The Australian starts from fifth.
There are five minutes to go until the formation lap begins at Monza.
Two stops is the expected strategy, with a visit to the pits proving costly here due to the high speeds of the pack blasting past.
For the first time, DRS will be detected at both the Lesmos and Parabolica, opening the wing of the chasing car on the subsequent straight.
