The top five drivers were covered by 0.429s. Behind them, Schumacher ends the day in sixth ahead of Massa, Perez, Barrichello and Rosberg.
Lewis Hamilton completes a McLaren one-two, with Alonso third, Vettel fourth and Webber in fifth spot.
A virtual deployment of the safety car is now taking place to test systems ahead of the race.
At the sharp end, Jenson Button is quickest after the second practice session at Albert Park, with a quickest lap of 1m25.854s.
Hispania will at least be able to complete a data download after that Liuzzi lap to check if the systems on the car are functioning properly.
Kovalainen has survived a late off into the gravel as the drivers continue to struggle to remain on the Albert Park circuit.
Liuzzi makes it through the first two sectors and brings the F111 into the pits at the end of an installation lap.
90 min: The flag is out on second practice in Melbourne.
88 min: Meantime, some interesting news. HRT have managed to fire up Liuzzi's car and he's heading down to Turn 1.
87 min: Rosberg completes the lap in 1m35s. He is also told on the team radio that DRS is temporarily disabled.
86 min: The FIA also plans a safety car test at the end of this session to check the latest changes to the procedures ahead of the first race.
85 min: Nico Rosberg is one of seven drivers currently out there and he begins another lap on his hard slick tyres.
84 min: Alonso remains on track in his Ferrari as team boss Stefano Domenicali chats with Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery in the pitlane
83 min: Many drivers have reacted to this latest shower and elected to pit. There are just six cars on track now.
82 min: Alonso takes the opportunity to test the rear wing system as he chases Alguersuari down the straight but he doesn't make it past the Toro Rosso as the circuit begins to get damp.
80 min: It is beginning to rain again as we tick down under 10 minutes to go.
79 min: Trulli almost matches his team-mate's time with a 1m30.912s effort.
78 min: Glock has also improved with a 1m33.040s, but he is still over seven seconds off the leading time.
77 min: Both Lotus drivers find time, with Kovalainen now 4.9 seconds off the benchmark in 20th.
76 min: 21 of the 24 drivers are currently on track. Obvious two out of the three still in the pits are the stranded HRT duo.
75 min: Hamilton has locked-up significantly with both front tyres into Turn 1, potentially denting his progress on that set of Pirellis.
74 min: There are no significant moves in the headline times as the teams focus on race preparation.
72 min: Alonso is also leaving the pitlane with the softer rubber on his Ferrari.
70 min: Hamilton is heading out with the harder tyres on his McLaren.
69 min: Renault is keeping a close eye on the radar, via @officialLRGP: "We still see rain in the area. Chance of a light shower in 5 mins."
68 min: Both Virgin cars are on track at the moment, with the pair currently 7.5 seconds off the leading times.
68 min: Still no movement as yet at HRT, as the team works to get Tonio Liuzzi out before the end of the session. Just over 21 minutes remaining.
66 min: Trulli improves his time but remains 20th, having been reminded that he can no longer open the rear wing away from the overtaking zone.
63 min: Nico Rosberg is down in 10th at the moment. He is now on a soft tyre run, as we see replays of his team-mate Schumacher pushing the limits in Turn 1.
63 min: With the rear wing test now taking place, teams will likely fuel up the cars for the final part of the session while looking at race pace.
61 min: That lap from the world champion now means the top four are covered by just 0.160s. His team-mate Webber is fifth and back in the pits.
60 min: Sebastian Vettel - now on the soft compound - is set for a move towards the front. He crosses the line in 1m26.014s to go fourth.
60 min: Kovalainen moves up to 19th quickest with his ninth lap of the session. Team-mate Trulli is 20th.
58 min: Alonso tops the middle sector as he moves up to third quickest with a soft tyre effort in his Ferrari.
56 min: So Button now leads the pack with that 1m25.854s lap, with Hamilton now second, Webber third, Schumacher fourth, Vettel fifth and Massa sixth.
55 min: Vettel vaults up the list to fifth spot with a time of 1m26.604s.
55 min: Button reports understeer to his McLaren team as he laps on the softer compound. Despite that, he takes the benchmark time with a 1m25.854s.
54 min: Hamilton tops the times with a 1m25.986s effort in his McLaren.
54 min: Webber improves again with the soft tyre. He is up to second spot with a lap of 1m26.283s.
