54 min: Hamilton clocks the fastest first two sectors and is on for a big improvement.
53 min: With the race-condition test of the rear wing system beginning shortly, this is clearly the teams' best chance of going for quick times on the softer tyres this afternoon.
53 min: Vettel is still out there running laps in the high 1m30s bracket, while more and more drivers are opting for a soft tyre run.
52 min: Button tops the times with a new benchmark of 1m26.156s.
51 min: Button also has soft tyres on his McLare as he sets the fastest first sector time of the session.
51 min: Massa is on the softer rubber as well, with the teams making the switch of compound as track conditions slowly improve.
51 min: Webber uses the softer tyre to good effect with a lap of 1m26.940s to move up to fourth position.
50 min: Mark Webber is also out there using the soft compound. He is currently 18th in the standings.
49 min: Kobayashi also has the softer Pirellis on his Sauber as he improves to 13th fastest.
48 min: The yellow band is clearly visible on the soft compound, but Buemi doesn't help his cause with an off-track excursion on the following lap.
47 min: Buemi is currently 12th in the classification, but set to move up the order ... he does with a lap of 1m27.697s and joins team-mate Alguersuari in the top eight.
46 min: Sebastien Buemi is using soft tyres as he laps Albert Park in the sister Toro Rosso.
45 min: Jaime Alguersuari improves four places and is now seventh in the standings with a lap of 1m27.568s.
44 min: Hamilton also clocked the fastest middle sector but remains third fastest after catching Maldonado's Williams in the final part of the lap.
43 min: Hamilton sets the fastest first sector time on his latest lap.
43 min: Heidfeld continues on a run, improving to ninth quickest with a 1m28.102s. Team-mate Petrov is eighth quickest.
41 min: Button is back in the McLaren garage and has told the team that the car feels better now.
38 min: Schumacher also comes into the pits to bring what is his third run to an end. He is 0.116s clear of Button, with Hamilton third.
37 min: Massa and Glock have both been off the road in recent minutes, taking a familiar trip across the grass.
37 min: Barrichello has also improved and is up to fourth spot, with a best time of 1m27.280s. At the end of the following lap he pits.
36 min: Schumacher is on a rapid lap and comes through the second sector point well ahead of Button's benchmark. Indeed, he tops the list with 1m26.590s.
35 min: Alonso is on track now, slotting in fourth quickest after a slight delay in the garage with a technical issue on the F150 Italia.
35 min: A few more drivers are on track now, including Schumacher, Maldonado and Vettel.
34 min: Button is pressing on now, setting the fastest first sector along with personal bests around the rest of the lap to top the times with a 1m26.706s.
32 min: In the HRT garage, it appears that the effort is being pushed on to try and get one of the two cars out before the end of the session.
31 min: Button clocks a 1m32s lap as he continues a run on the hard compound tyres.
31 min: Up front, Hamilton tops the list with a time of 1m26.961s with Rosberg second, Button third, Massa fourth, Schumacher fifth and Petrov sixth.
29 min: Michael Schumacher completed just one timed lap on his second run. It is likely that he reacted to the shower threat and is waiting for a better time to come out.
29 min: McLaren chairman Ron Dennis is watching over proceedings in the team's garage this afternoon.
27 min: Mark Webber is told over the team radio that there is a risk of showers for the next few minutes.
26 min: Most of the drivers are in the pits at the moment as the teams look at the light shower on the radar image.
24 min: He improves by three-tenths, but will need to find a lot more pace to beat the re-introduced 107% rule in Q1 tomorrow.
22 min: D'Aambrosio starts another flying lap. The Belgian is currently seven seconds off Hamilton's early benchmark.
22 min: Michael Schumacher comes back out to begin a second run.

Vettel and Webber appear to be running a similar programme of work in the early stages of this session. Both of them are lapping around four seconds off the pace so far.
19 min: Many drivers are back into the pits after a short first run. Vettel is one of the few out on track, and he moves up from 17th to 15th with a time of 1m30.731s.
19 min: However the Lotus is still struggling at Turn 3 and Trulli is the latest visitor to the gravel trap. He continues.
18 min: Trulli clocks his first lap of the day as he finally gets his running underway.
17 min: At Hispania, the preparation work continues in an effort to get Liuzzi and Karthikeyan out on track today. No immediate signs that they'll be out soon.
