Lap 46: The Ferrari team are encouraging Alonso to push in response to Vettel. That is not ideal given the Spaniard's lack of fresh engines.
Lap 45: So we have eighth to 13th all within one second of each other. Interestingly, Kovalainen is 14th and only 12 seconds behind this scrap.
Lap 45: Alonso is now closing on traffic in the form of di Grassi's Virgin.
Lap 45: Vettel is pushing very hard now and takes the fastest lap out to 1m48.920s. He's just a second behind Alonso and ready to pounce.
Lap 44: Hulkenberg makes a mistake which allows Massa to take an interested look at the back of the Williams. Massa isn't able to take the place and Hulkenberg holds onto ninth.
Lap 44: Hamilton has arrived back in the pits to contemplate his second costly DNF in a row.
Lap 44: Sutil is clearly holding up the back of cars behind him. The German is still in eighth position, but now has Hulkenberg, Massa, Petrov, Buemi and Alguersuari all nose-to-tail behind him.
Lap 44: Lucas di Grassi pits from 17th position in the Virgin. He rolls back into the race without problem, but remains rooted to the back of the field.
Lap 43: Schumacher in 15th is catching Kovalainen at almost three seconds per lap. At this current rate he may just catch the Lotus before the end of the race.
Lap 43: Vettel is asking his engineer to let him know if the team spot brake problems with his Red Bull.
Lap 42: Sutil in eighth is coming under strenuous attack from Hulkenberg. The gap between them is 0.7 seconds with Massa a further 0.6 seconds back in 10th.
Lap 42: Vettel is now just 1.1 seconds behind Alonso and is not letting the Spaniard get away easily with this race.
Lap 42: Button is being pushed by his McLaren engineers and is told to push Webber, whose tyres have been in use since the first safety car.
Lap 42: Glock is 16th, but 56 seconds behind Schumacher, with di Grassi the last remaining runner in 17th position.
Lap 41: Race control has stated that the incident between Schumacher and Heidfeld is being investigated by the stewards.
Lap 41: Buemi is 13th with Kovalainen 14th and Schumacher 54.2 seconds behind the Lotus in 15th , after that change of front wing.
Lap 41: Vettel has not given up the chase out front, with the gap just 1.4 seconds between the two.
Lap 40: Hulkenberg is now ninth in the Williams with Massa one second behind him in 10th. Petrov is 11th with Alguersuari 12th.
Lap 40: Rosberg is in fifth position, 1.8 seconds behind Button, with Kubica sixth, Barrichello seventh and Sutil eighth.
Lap 39: Michael Schumacher and Nick Heidfeld collided in a battle over 14th position. Schumacher had to pit through new front wing and Heidfeld is out of the race.
Lap 39: Alonso leads by two seconds from Vettel, with Webber over five seconds further adrift.
Lap 38: Webber's pace is good and he seems to have survived that contact. He will extend his advantage at the top of the points considerably.
Lap 37: Replays show Hamilton was clear past after taking it three wide with the Virgin, but the door was closing and contact was inevitable.
Lap 37: Webber is asking the team to check if he has damage, while the stewards also look into the incident.
Lap 37: Webber now has Button on his tail, as McLaren ponder potentially terminal damage to Hamilton's title campaign.
Lap 36: Alonso is away from Vettel as Webber and Hamilton muscle past the pair of Virgins.
Lap 36: The safety car comes into the pitlane and we are racing once again.
Lap 35: If it stays like this, the points will read: Webber 202; Hamilton 192; Alonso 192; Vettel 181 and Button 173.
Lap 35: Buemi is 16th as Kovalainen comes into the pits from 17th.
Lap 35: Massa is 11th ahead of Petrov 12th, Alguersuari 13th, Heidfeld 14th and Schumacher in 15th position.
Lap 35: Button is told to try and push at the restart, given that Webber is on old tyres and Red Bull's history of brake problems here.
Lap 34: Behind the five championship contenders, Rosberg is sixth, with Kubica seventh, Barrichello eighth, Sutil ninth and Hulkenberg 10th.
Lap 34: Klien is wheeled back into the HRT garage with problems.
Lap 34: This second safety car intervention suggests the race will be capped at two hours, with the flag just 54 minutes away.
Lap 34: Now that Senna's car has been removed we can see the extensive damage to the right-hand side of Kobayashi's Sauber as it sits alone on the track.
Lap 34: Hamilton reports that his drinks system is not working properly.
