Lap 12: Massa pits this time round - possibly to cover Button's recent stop. He takes on the hard tyres in 3.3s and is away.
Lap 12: Hamilton tries the outside this time into the Senna S but still he can't make it past the Williams.
Lap 12: Button can now of course continue to the finish having used both types of tyre.
Lap 11: He gets out of the queue and takes on medium compound tyres in a 3.8s stop.
Lap 11: Button pits from 10th in the McLaren.
Lap 11: Hamilton is told to do "everything he can" to get past the Williams.
Lap 11: Button was alongside Schumacher over the line into the Senna S but was not able to make the move for ninth stick.
Lap 10: The scrap continues around the lap with Hulkenberg still confidently holding Hamilton at bay.
Lap 10: Hamilton tries a bold move to the inside but Hulkenberg defends strongly and is still ahead of the McLaren.
Lap 10: Both McLaren drivers will be out of title contention if it finishes like this, with Hamilton still looking for a way past Hulkenberg.
Lap 10: Christian Klien did make it out onto the circuit in the HRT. He goes four laps down.
Lap 9: Alonso, in third, is clocked 11.9 seconds behind leader Vettel.
Lap 9: This is reminiscent of Ayrton Senna holding up the field for a long time in the early stages of the 1992 race at this circuit.
Lap 9: Hamilton reports that he has "no grip" as he continues to look for a way through on the Williams.
Lap 8: Barrichello, Massa, Schumacher, Button and Rosberg are all closing on this battle for fourth.
Lap 8: The gaps in the midfield are very close as the pace is being slowed down by Hulkenberg's defence further up the road.
Lap 8: Hamilton can't repeat Alonso's move and a train of cars is now forming behind them with Kubica looking to challenge the McLaren.
Lap 8: Jenson Button maintains 10th place and is one second behind Schumacher's Mercedes.
Lap 7: Hamilton is now lining up to challenge the polesitter as Alonso is off to chase down the Red Bulls.
Lap 7: Petrov passes Kovalainen for 18th position and will now tear after the Force India duo.
Lap 7: Alonso finally slips his Ferrari up the inside of Hulkenberg's Williams at Decida do Lago and he is through into third.
Lap 6: Vettel has a 2.5 second advantage over team-mate Webber now as the battle rages behind them.
Lap 6: So Kovalainen is now 18th with Petrov down in 19th after a terrible opening phase, Glock 20th, Trulli 21st, di Grassi 22nd and Senna bringing up the rear.
Lap 6: Alonso knows he can't afford a 50/50 dive on Hulkenberg as failure to finish would be terminal for his title aspirations.
Lap 6: Sutil is past Kovalainen and takes over 17th position. He is 2.6s behind his Force India team-mate.
Lap 6: Hulkenberg is already eight seconds behind leader Vettel but again defends from the championship leader.
Lap 5: Liuzzi is 16th and Kovalainen in 16th is beginning to fall back. Sutil is 18th and about to make a move on the Finn.
Lap 5: Hamilton is now right with the battle between Alonso and Hulkenberg as the Red Bulls scarper away out front.
Lap 5: Behind the top eight, Schumacher is ninth with Button 10th, Rosberg 11th, Heidfeld 12th, Alguersuari 13th, Buemi 14th and Kobayashi in 15th.
Lap 5: Alonso tries the outside again on Hulkenberg as they blast over the grid but the rookie defends well as they start another lap.
Lap 4: Vettel leads away up front from Webber, Hulkenberg, Alonso, Hamilton, Kubica, Barrichello and Massa.
Lap 4: Alonso is all over the back of Hulkenberg as he tries to put the Ferrari up to the final podium place.
Lap 3: Webber's move on Hulkenberg came just three corners later as he dummied to the outside before taking advantage of a moment from the Williams
Lap 3: Schumacher gets through ahead of Button at the Senna S and takes over ninth position.
Lap 3: Buemi has made a very good start to the race and runs in 14th place as he takes track position away from Kobayashi.
Lap 3: Replays of the start show a great launch for Vettel put him in position to take the inside line on polesitter Hulkenberg into the Senna S.
Lap 2: But it has all gone wrong for Hamilton at Decida do Lago as he runs wide and allows Alonso through into fourth.
Lap 2: Button is ninth and has made a decent start but has Schumacher climbing all over the back of him on the second lap.
Lap 2: Alonso and Hamilton are wheel-to-wheel in a battle over fourth, with the McLaren only just defending into the Senna S.
Lap 2: It has been a storming opening lap for the Red Bull pair as they demote the polesitter down to third.
