Warm-up: Abt goes faster than pole time

With only one race distance under its belt and no testing since the Hockenheim season-opener, the privateer Abt Audi squad believed its Achilles' heel could be 'guesstimating' a race set-up for round two at the Nurburgring. Not so...

Christian Abt's morning warm-up time of 1m36.943s was quicker than team mate Laurent Aiello's pole time, with Aiello making a TT-R one-two, ahead of the 2000-spec Persson Mercedes of Tomas Jager.

Peter Dumbreck was fastest of the 2001-spec Mercs in fourth, just edging the second Persson car of Christijan Albers and the 2001-spec CLK of Marcel Fassler.

Reigning champion and round one winner Bernd Schneider, who lines up third for the sprint race behind two Audis, was seventh in his CLK, ahead of the Merc of Uwe Alzen and the Audi of Mattias Ekstrom.

Top Opel was Yves Olivier, who matched his qualifying performance of 10th in a 2000-spec Phoenix-run Astra V8. Reuter was best of the 2001-spec Astras, taking the 11th fastest time following a nightmare qualifying session that sees him start 17th after front anti-roll bar problems hampered him.

Darren Turner was 15th in his 2000-spec Rosberg Mercedes, while reigning BTCC champion Alain Menu was 19th in Euroteam's 2001-spec Astra.

The seven-lap sprint race, which defines the grid for the pit stop race, starts at 14:15 BST (15:15 local), with the 22-lap main race getting underway at 14:55 BST (15:55 local).
