Practice 2: Schneider storms to front

Bernd Schneider stormed ominously to the top of the time sheets in the second free practice session ahead of the sixth round of the DTM championship at EuroSpeedway Lausitz. The AMG Mercedes driver, yet to win a race this year in the series he has dominated for the previous two seasons, was in imperious form and obviously eager to break his 2002 duck

Schneider was the only driver to dip below the 1m40s mark with a best of 1m39.976s to finish nearly half a second ahead of runaway championship leader Laurent Aiello's Audi. First session pace setter Mattias Ekstrom could only manage fourth, 0.4s down on his earlier time.

Only five drivers improved on their first session times in the hot afternoon sun, Audi's Christian Abt and lead Opel peddler Alain Menu in fifth and sixth positions respectively.

Sole British representative, Scotsman Peter Dumbreck, finished the session a disappointing 15th overall in his 2001 Mercedes CLK, but enjoyed a more productive session than Audi driver Karl Wendlinger. The former Sauber F1 driver suffered oil circulation problems did not emerge during the second session after finishing the first session a creditable 11th overall.

The single 45 minute qualifying session runs on Saturday afternoon after one hour of free practice early in the morning.
