Nurburgring qual race: Alzen's thriller

Uwe Alzen won an incredibly close fought DTM qualification race at the Nurburgring today (Sunday) for AMG Mercedes, defeating Abt Audi rival Laurent Aiello by two-tenths of a second

Alzen made a lightning getaway from pole as fellow front row starter Aiello seemed to miss the lights and spent the first corner fending off Bernd Schneider (Mercedes). The top four were soon running as one, however, as Opel's Alain Menu fell back in fifth place into the clutches of Christian Abt (Audi).

That fight was resolved after contact saw Menu spin down to the tail of the field, while Abt continued to finish fifth. More collisions saw Peter Dumbreck's Mercedes harpoon the Abt Audi of Mattias Ekstrom, causing both to spin at the new Mercedes Arena. Bernd Maylander also punted Opel's Michael Bartels into a spin.

At the front, Aiello gave Alzen a good work over, but couldn't find a way past. He also had to keep one eye on his mirrors on Schneider, who was being given a far easier ride by team-mate Fassler. On the final lap, Aiello mounted a last-ditch effort at the final corner which failed to grab the win by 0.2secs, and the top four flashed over the line covered by a second.

The main race, which features a mandatory pit stop, starts at 14.30 local time (13.30 BST).
