New Audi racks up the miles in Italy

The Abt Sportsline Audi TT-R team complete a five-day test at Vallelunga in Italy today (Friday) as the team hones its new car for 2002, which features the new mandatory double rear wing set-up

After initial testing with Christian Abt at Estoril in Portugal a fortnight ago, Laurent Aiello drove the car for the first time from Monday to Friday.

He was joined behind the wheel from Thursday by Mattias Ekstrom and Karl Wendlinger as the privateer squad works through its job sheet of component changes and alterations to the car's set-up.

"The days at Vallelunga have made me very optimistic," said Aiello. "We had time to try and improve many details. But our list which we have to work through by the season's start is still very long."

The mandatory new double rear wing has brought a new challenge for engineers, however: "The new package doesn't deliver the performance we had hoped for," said chief technician Albert Deuring.

The team shared the Italian venue this week with the Joest Audi sportscar team.
