Frentzen extends Opel contract
Heinz-Harald Frentzen has taken up his option of racing for Opel for a further year in the DTM series next year. Opel's motorsport director Volker Strycek made the announcement at this weekend's invitation race in Shanghai
"The current contract included an option for extra season with Opel in the DTM," Strycek said. "Heinz-Harald Frentzen has taken up that option in time. We are happy that our co-operation with him will continue next year."
Frentzen's highest position of the year so far was the season-opener at Hockenheim in April where he finished 11th. While the German acknowledged that his switch to DTM from Formula 1 has not been easy, he is confident he'll be winning races soon.
"I have really found a new home with Opel in the DTM," the German said. "Indeed, my debut in the DTM hasn't been easy, but anyone who knows me and has been following my career will also know that I don't give up that easily. Also when things are not running that well. I knew from the very beginning that my debut in the DTM wouldn't be an easy affair. Most of my colleagues who have switched into the DTM had their learning phase as well.
"In the DTM, you don't just get in and win races right away. It has taken time for other drivers and so it does for me. Another thing is that I have been pushed off the track several times during the first few races. But all in all, driving in the DTM is a real pleasure for me, and so is the contact with the fans."
