DTM America would welcome US manufacturers

DTM rights holders ITR say they are open to US manufacturers joining the championship and have invited representatives to this year's Hockenheim season opener

A new DTM American championship, which aims to start a series for cars built to DTM rules in the US by 2016, was announced on Tuesday.

BMW joined Mercedes and Audi on the DTM grid in 2012, with Bruno Spengler delivering the title in a tense season finale.

ITR boss Hans Werner Aufrecht explained that while German manufacturers are keen to explore the US, he believes foreign manufacturers want to have a presence in Germany.

"We already have had conversations with the three big American manufacturers," he said.

"Now we have to offer these colleagues the opportunity to take a look behind the DTM curtains. This certainly will happen around the season kick-off, on 5th May in Hockenheim.

"Just as the German manufacturers enter important markets worldwide, the American and Japanese manufacturers have the goal to make an appearance on the German market."

Aufrecht also believes that the current regulations won't restrict opportunities for prospective manufacturers.

"In these days, all the car manufacturers have to reduce their costs," he added.

"Reducing the costs doesn't necessarily mean that the manufacturers can't be offered the opportunity to define themselves."
