Wins for Menu and Plato at Brands

Alain Menu and Jason Plato both scored surprise victories in the inaugural race of the new-format British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch

The series has returned to its multi-class roots with the top-line Super Touring cars, as raced in the series since the early 90s, joined by Super Production class B.

Race one, the sprint event, was won by the Ford Mondeo of Alain Menu from the Vauxhall of Yvan Muller and Ford team mate Rickard Rydell, the Swede on the podium in his first event for Ford.

Class winners were Matt Neal, who battled an ill-handling Nissan to win the Independents division, and Alan Morrison who took class B victory in his Peugeot 306.

The feature race was won by Jason Plato, on the occasion of the Englishman's first competitive appearance for Vauxhall. He was joined on the podium by Ford's Anthony Reid and Yvan Muller, making it the second all Ford/Vauxhall podium of the day.

The race was marked by a severe crash for series favourite James Thompson, whose Honda left the circuit at the challenging Dingle Dell corner, and crashed into the barriers in front of a BBC camera crew.
