RML joins SEAT attack

SEAT has announced that Ray Mallock Limited, the team that won the 1999 British Touring Car Championship with Nissan, will be behind its Toledo Cupra programme in the UK's top saloon car series this year

RML will join forces with SEAT Sport UK and field two cars for 2001 BTCC champion Jason Plato and its Cupra one-makes series champ Robert Huff. The cars will be built to ETCC specification by SEAT Sport in Spain, before being developed by SEAT Sport UK and RML.

"We are absolutely delighted to be part of the SEAT Sport UK team at the start of this exciting new project," said RML principal Ray Mallock. "Under [series boss] Alan Gow's guidance, the BTCC looks set to flourish once again. We will be working hard with SEAT Sport UK to ensure the programme achieves race and championship success for the SEAT brand."

Grant Clearwater, joint team principal of SEAT Sport UK, said: "This year promises to be very exciting for us, with the SEAT Cupra Championship entering its second year and joining the TOCA Tour, and with two cars in the BTCC."

The engine type for its maiden campaign has yet to be decided. SEAT is known to be investigating the development of a diesel powerplant.
