Qualifying: Aiello on track for bonanza payout

Laurent Aiello made sure he stayed on track for a £250,000 payout by claiming pole position at Brands Hatch today

The Nissan Primera driver confirmed his recent form by snatching pole with just one flying lap. If he wins both tomorrow's races he gets £250,000 for four wins in a row.

First out on the track was Vincent Radermecker Volvo S40, closely followed by John Cleland who will race in his 200th BTCC race tomorrow, Russell Spence and independent leader Matt Neal.

Neal set the first fast time and led the field for the first third of the session, probably helped by the latest Nissan Aerodynamic bits, fitted on his car for the first time.

Williams Renault, Honda and Nissan were all playing a waiting game sitting in the pits hoping the track would speed up and praying for it not to rain.

Yvan Muller put in 13 laps, Mark Blair did 15, but it did neither of them much good as Muller wound up 11th and Blair right at the back. Jason Plato made more use of his eight laps taking third on the grid eventually.

Half way through the session Russell Spence locked his brakes at McLaren and went straight on into the tyre barrier at Clearways to bring the red flags out.

Alain Menu finally appeared and was initially in third but Rydell did two flying laps and deposed him as did ex team-mate Plato.

Then with three minutes to go David Leslie appeared to claim fourth
