Muller takes first championship win in sprint

A bold overtaking manoeuvre gave Vauxhall's Yvan Muller a surprise first BTCC win at Brands Hatch today

Nearing the end of the sprint race, Nissan's Laurent Aiello was chasing Anthony Reid of Ford.

Reid eventually went wide at Clearways, and as Aiello took the gap, they touched and both lost momentum but continued down the top straight.

However, Muller was able to pass both of them with a late breaking move into Paddock. Reid followed through to gain 2nd.

At the start it looked as though it would be a Ford walkover, with Alain Menu ahead and Anthony Reid holding up the pack, which allowed Menu to get clear.

Further back the independent Mark Blair in the Vauxhall Vectra had David Leslie and Peter Kox to contend with. The trio ran alongside each other and when contact was made Kox went off.

Matt Neal retired with steering problems leaving Mark to take the Michelin Cup win. Lots of work on the car since Thruxton paid off for Blair, but he and the rest of the independents can't match Neal for pace.

On lap 12 Vincent Radermecker's Volvo ended up in the gravel trap at the revised Graham Hill bend, and the safety car was brought out for four laps.

At the restart, with everybody in a tight group, Jason Plato managed to force a way past past James Thompson and finished the race in fourth.

Laurent Aiello boosted his lead in the Drivers Championship with third place.
