Muller responds to Plato's appeal
Works Vauxhall driver Yvan Muller has offered to help team-mate Jason Plato's appeal to the Motor Sports Association over the pair's on-track clash at Silverstone earlier this month (click HERE for story) as the Frenchman feels his testimony could result in Plato's punishment being increased
Plato was handed a 30-second time penalty after clashing with race leader Muller on the final lap of the Feature race. Muller slowed with an engine problem through Bridge, and as Plato dived down the inside of Priory he collided with the Frenchman's Astra Coupe.
Plato went on to win the race, while Muller limped across the line with damaged suspension in third. The Clerk of the Course's decision to penalise Plato dropped him to third instead, but Muller lost out on an important race victory to the Egg Sport Vauxhall Astra Coupe of James Thompson, which had passed him just before the finish line.
Plato intends to post an appeal with the MSA to clear his name, saying that he has fresh evidence obtained after the race that indicates that Muller's problem was more serious than originally known and contributed to the collision. Muller, who had stayed quiet on the subject, has now added fuel to the fire that now rages between them.
"I totally agree with Jason, I am not happy with the result either, and I will support him because the decision should not have been what it was," Muller told Autosport. "He should have been banned from the race because of what he did. I lost the chance to win the race."
Muller has hit back at Plato's claims that his engine problem was serious enough to prevent him from finishing the race: "For sure I had a misfire. I have always said that. But the way that he pushed me out of the race was wrong. I left a good space between myself and the apex and he pushed me all the way through the corner.
"He has said that I had run out of fuel, but if that was so, how could I finish the race? It's bullshit. He's just trying to justify what he did. For sure, I am being a bit sarcastic, but I have been quiet all year. If he needs my help, then he can call me," he added.
