Feature pole goes to Aiello
The weather did everything except hand Laurent Aiello the Auto Trader British Touring Car Championship trophy at Silverstone.
In qualifying for tomorrow's Sprint race, Nissan Primera team-mate David Leslie qualified
down in fifteenth place, while Aiello will once again start from pole position.
In the One-Shot Showdown Leslie had the misfortune of having his qualifying run right in the middle of a rain shower.
While the track wasn't completely wet, it was slippery enough to cause Leslie to set the slowest lap time of anyone, over 4s away from pole.
Just minutes later the rain had stopped, and the strong wind quickly dried the track.
It was enough for Aiello to pull a stunning lap out of the bag, far quicker than anyone else in similar conditions.
Second was Jason Plato, although the Renault Laguna driver had originally been placed last.
His car failed the weight check after the run, but the team refused to believe it could be 25kg underweight, and protested.
When it was weighed again, it was found to be legal; Plato's time in the dry was
less than 0.02s slower than Aiello.
Third was James Thompson, in his Honda Accord, just ahead of the Nissan Primera of Independent Matt Neal.
Thompson was the last man to get his flying lap in before the rain came.
