Bennett speaks out over Reid clash
British Touring Car rookie Phil Bennett has spoken out over his clash with Anthony Reid during Sunday's Feature race at Donington and says the top drivers should concentrate on their own driving before criticising others
Bennett has been in and out of trouble in his rookie year and the 30-year-old received a one-race ban for colliding with the Peugeot of Steve Soper at Croft last month. But he has come back to take two wins - the first came in the Silverstone Sprint race two weeks ago and the second in the Sprint race at Donington on Sunday.
However, the Egg Sport driver's weekend was not without incident and he clashed with Anthony Reid during yesterday's Feature race. The Scot blamed Bennett entirely, but stewards saw it differently and, after watching a replay, he was later cleared of any blame by series organiser TOCA.
"All these experienced guys think they can blame me because I'm a rookie," said Bennett. "Maybe they should look at their own driving."
Bennett's Vauxhall Astra and Reid's MG ZS came together at the Old Hairpin just four laps from the end of the race as they battled for fourth place. Reid was out on the spot with broken front suspension and the Scot blamed Bennett entirely, accusing him of going for a move that just wasn't on.
"I hadn't considered making a move there at all because at the start of the lap, the gap was about 1.2s." Bennett said. "He [Reid] lost control on the wet exit kerbs at the Old Hairpin. After watching the video I was cleared of any blame by the stewards and they apologised for wasting my time."
Bennett remains fourth in the drivers' championship, more than a hundred points behind team mate James Thompson with only one round to go at Brands Hatch in two weeks' time.
