The Autosport Awards celebrate top drivers and machines, with categories decided by votes and panels

Formula 1 world champion Lando Norris is the winner of Autosport’s 2025 British Competition Driver of the Year Award, voted for by fans.

The 26-year-old battled with McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to take his first world title by two points, scoring seven grand prix wins in 2025.

Autosport readers have voted Norris the best British driver of the season against an expanded list of nominees that included his fellow F1 drivers Ollie Bearman and George Russell, F2 frontrunner Luke Browning, World Endurance champion James Calado, British Touring Car title winner Tom Ingram and Formula E king Oliver Rowland.

Norris also picked up the inaugural Autosport Champion accolade at the 38th Autosport Awards at London’s Roundhouse on 21 January, celebrating his F1 title success nine years after he won the prestigious McLaren Autosport BRDC Award.

Sir Jackie Stewart, who handed Norris his first Autosport Award 10 years ago, presented the Autosport Champion honour to the reigning F1 world champion on the night in front of guests and fans.

“It is a pleasure to be here 10 years on since my first award, it has been an incredible journey with so much of my team here tonight,” Norris said. “In 2016 I got my foot in the door, my first simulator test and my first F1 car test. There is a hugely emotional story behind it all and memorable in so many ways. So many good things and incredible moments.

“Moments like this allow it to [feel real]. When I go back home it is still normal life, I like to go and play golf, spend time with my friends, and do normal things. But being back here with Sir Jackie after becoming an F1 world champion makes it feel real.

“Getting to share this with my team, my family and my friends, that is the best bit by a country mile, going through that journey with them and creating these memories. Including my mum of course who is here tonight – the star of the show!”

It is the sixth time in seven years that Norris has won the award. Previous winners include F1 world champions Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill, Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton. F1 drivers-turned-commentators Martin Brundle and David Coulthard are also former victors.

Other categories decided by fan voting include Driver of the Year, Moment of the Year presented by Bahrain International Circuit, Competition Car of the Year, Rally Driver of the Year and Rookie of the Year. Two new awards for 2025 are Team of the Year and Creator of the Year.

Further awards, decided by expert judging panels, include the Pioneering and Innovation Award, Promoter of the Year and Brand Partnership of the Year.
