Grosjean takes Monza Auto GP pole

Romain Grosjean moved a step closer to claiming the Auto GP title by taking pole position and the consequent bonus point in qualifying for the Monza finale

The ex-Renault Formula 1 driver only joined the new championship from round five, but three wins since then have allowed him to move into the points lead.

He took pole this morning by a clear half second over DAMS team-mate Duncan Tappy, who is third in the standings, now 11 points behind Grosjean. His closest title rival is DAMS' other driver Edoardo Piscopo, but although the Italian is only two points behind, he starts back in eighth.

Adrien Tambay secured third on the grid for Charouz-Gravity, ahead of Lazarus driver Fabio Onidi and series returnee Giorgio Pantano, who is driving for the Ombra team in its Auto GP debut.

Long-shot title contender Jan Charouz (Charouz-Gravity) was only seventh in qualifying. Luca Filippi and Carlos Iaconelli's remote championship hopes were ended by Grosjean taking the point for pole, while they still start back in 11th and 13th respectively.

GP2 Asia champion Davide Valsecchi took ninth on his category debut with the RP Motorsport team.
