Theissen wants less contact on track
BMW Motorsport boss Mario Theissen feels that more punishments need to be given to drivers that collide with their rivals on track
Alessandro Zanardi said that he felt the driving standards were poor in the WTCC prior to the season finale at Macau last weekend, and Theissen agrees that some drivers take it too far.
"You need contact in touring car racing but I think it is a bit too much," Theissen told autosport.com.
Some drivers were handed penalties during the 2006 season for poor driving standards, but Theissen believes that more needs to be done to stop racers deliberately driving into each other.
"Sometimes, you get the impression that one guy tries to kick another off the road," he said. "That is not touring car racing, that should be punished immediately."
However, the BMW boss also feels that the former European series has improved as a championship in its first two years as a world championship.
"The championship is certainly on an upwards slope since it used to be a European championship," he said. "I would not say it exceeded expectations but it has met them."
