S'Touring Race 1: Tarquini beats Alfas
Pole sitter Gabriele Tarquini took victory in the first of Sunday's ETCC Super Touring Car races at Austria's A1-Ring, but it wasn't quite the pole to flag victory the Italian would have hoped for
Tarquini was beaten away at the lights by the Fabrizio Giovanardi's Alfa and the four-wheel drive Audi A4 of Roberto Colciago. And although Tarquini's Honda Accord passed Colciago on the first lap, it wasn't until lap 5 that Tarquini eventually overtook Giovanardi for the lead.
After that, the race was effectively Tarquini's, taking the chequered flag on lap 12 1.7 seconds clear of the Alfa.
Further back Frenchman Fabrice Walfisch in the second Accord overtook Colciago on lap six for third place and pulled away to finish out on his own, seven seconds back from the winner.
Tarquini's victory means he has 354 points in the standings, 29 behind second-placed Nicola Larini, but Giovanardi is still out in front on 417.
