S'Prod race: Gianni's smash 'n' grab

Gianni Morbidelli won the final Super Production round of the ETCC season but had to punt off Tom Coronel to do it. Meanwhile, Coronel's fellow Dutchmen Peter Kox and Duncan Huisman made the headlines with their collision which gave Kox the title

Pole sitter Tommy Rustad (Nissan Primera) was swamped at the start by a mixture of Norman Simon's BMW and Tobia Masini's Alfa Romeo 156, the three then colliding in a shunt caused when Simon moved over and clipped Rustad who firmly connected with Masini. The Alfa spun across the bows of the Nissan and hit Simon, eliminating them both and giving Rustad a front-right puncture.

After a couple of laps behind the safety car, the race resumed with title protagonists Duncan Huisman and Peter Kox in the lead, but not for long. Kox slammed into the rear of Huisman under braking for the first corner, sending Huisman into the gravel. Although Kox himself spun, the collision gave him the title.

With that pair out of the frame, Tom Coronel (BMW) held Gianni Morbidelli's similar 320I at bay until the last lap, when Morbidelli got to within striking distance and punted Coronel into a spin with just a couple of corners to go.

Morbidelli just held off Coronel's team mate Sandor van Es for victory, with Coronel recovering in third.
