Priaulx downplays qualifying showing
Andy Priaulx insists the World Touring Car Championship title fight is still wide open, despite his dominant performance in qualifying that netted him pole position
The reigning WTCC champion made sure to get his quick laps in early during the session, fearing that red flags would likely have an impact on proceedings, and the move paid off when a surprise rain shower soaked half the track.
But despite seeing some of his title rivals suffer due to the rain, especially Rickard Rydell, who will start 22nd, Priaulx knows that there is still plenty to play for with nine drivers all going for the crown.
"No chance am I champion yet," said the BMW driver after qualifying on pole by 1.310 seconds. "I respect my competitors far too much to think that it is over. We'll see what happens on Sunday."
Priaulx praised his team's efforts this weekend, having helped give him a car that has put him in the perfect place to win on Sunday.
"This result is not just about me, because the team have also done a good job," he explained. "My car felt very quick straight away and I felt very confident. I was able to do a quick time immediately, which is good for the race - and especially the first few laps."
Priaulx's belief that the title is not won yet has been backed up by fellow front row starter Dirk Muller, who has an outside chance of the championship.
The German is concerned that the reverse grid rules, which sees the top eight positions reversed for the second race, could play in series leader Augusto Farfus' hands.
"Everyone's chances are still completely there," he said. "With the races on Sunday anything can happen because there are long straights and tight corners. Farfus is seventh so is in perfect shape for the second race. Nothing is decided yet."
