Pau could host WTCC race

The World Touring Car Championship could have a race around the famous French streets of Pau next season

The tin-top series is actively looking at having a race at the famous French street circuit, which will this year host a British F3 International Series meeting.

The track has formally run races for F3000 and F3 Euroseries, but the World Touring Car Championship could be seen as a higher profile meeting

The only street race currently on the WTCC calendar is the championship finale in Macau, and organisers are keen to move to a higher percentage of street races in the future.

WTCC boss Marcello Lotti admitted to investigating the possibility of a taking the traditional Pau Street race date, but says the sticking point could be over when the race would be held.

"Our target is to have 25 per cent of our events on street circuits," Lotti told autosport.com. "We have Macau and we are speaking with Pau.

"If we go to Pau it would have to be our weekend completely. The problem with Pau is we have to sort out the day, because at the moment Pau is linked with the Pentecost. We have to see if there is some possibility of this.

"It could be nice to have three street circuits and with touring cars it is easy promote this kind of circuit."

Lotti is also looking towards a race in Japan next season, to be paired with the Macau race for logistical reasons.

This season the WTCC will have three races outside of Europe, with returning events in Puebla, Mexico and Macau being joined by a race at the Curitiba circuit in Brazil.

"We want to keep two American races, like Mexico and Brazil," Lotti added. "After that we are working towards having one more race in Asia, tied with Macau.

"We are working to check if there is a possibility to do a race in Japan. We are starting to speak with Singapore too."
