Menu takes pole for Macau finale

Alain Menu grabbed pole position for the World Touring Car Championship finale in Macau on Friday - as Yvan Muller moved a step closer claiming the crown by taking third spot on the grid

Menu, who drives for Chevrolet, put in his fastest lap right at the very end of the session - securing pole spot as he took the chequered flag.

Right behind him on the track was outgoing champion Andy Priaulx, who set his best effort then too, to seal a spot on the front row.

But behind the pair, Muller could not hide his delight at delivering an encouraging third fastest time - which crucially puts him five places ahead of his title rival Gabriele Tarquini on the grid.

The session ended with more disappointment for Tarquini, who crashed his SEAT Leon in the Solitude Esses to bring out a red flag during the middle part of qualifying.

Chevrolet's Rob Huff will start from fourth place, with Augusto Farfus following Tarquini's example and clouting the wall in the dying seconds of the session - leaving him unable to respond to the improving track conditions that helped his rivals bump him down the order.

Jordi Gene and Rickard Rydell will start sixth and seventh, ahead of Tarquini.
