Chevrolets to take grid penalties

Pre-race testing pacesetters Chevrolet will occupy the back row of the grid for the first World Touring Car Championship race at Macau as both Alain Menu and Nicola Larini have received penalties

Menu's 10-place grid drop was already anticipated, the Swiss driver being punished for a post-race incident with Dirk Muller in Valencia. Because Menu was competing under a suspended penalty after a collision in Istanbul, he will also have to drop 10 places in the race two starting order.

Larini's penalty is the consequence of an engine change. The engine in the Italian's Lacetti was damaged when he hit the barriers early in qualifying.

The Chevrolet duo had already suffered due to the rain and red flags in qualifying, and would only have started 21st and 24th even without the penalties.

Local ace Andre Couto has also received a grid demotion, having his best time deleted as a punishment for failing to stop at the weighbridge. He falls from 18th to 20th.

The sudden rain shower in Friday's qualifying session meant that 11 drivers officially failed to qualify under the series' 105% rule. Unsurprisingly, all have been given dispensation to start.

However, Duncan Huisman, Augusto Farfus, Gianni Morbidelli, Fabrizio Giovanardi, Stefano D'Aste, Luca Rangoni, Diego Romanini, Robert Huff, Menu, Couto and Peter Terting have all received 1000 euro fines for illegally lining up in the 'fast lane' of the pit lane before the green light was shown to resume qualifying following the two red flag stoppages.
