Stage six: Makinen stays ahead
Tommi Makinen is on course to extend his lead in this year's world championship, after a steady performance in the opening day of the San Remo Rally
The Mitsubishi driver, who has won the last three championships, is in sixth position - just over three seconds ahead of championship rival Didier Auriol.
The Finnish driver leapfrogged Auriol after the Toyota driver lost time in the sixth stage.
Francois Delecour has taken overall lead of the San Remo rally after winning stage six.
The Peugeot driver set a time of 13m 17.7s to move ahead of Gilles Panizzi.
Panizzi finished fifth on the stage to drop down to second overall.
Marcus Gronholm set the second fastest time of the stage to remain third overall.
Philippe Bugalski is fourth overall, with British hopeful Colin McRae jumping up to fifth, while Richard Burns continues in eighth place overall.
A third Peugeot driver Marcus Gronholm is third, with Citroen's Philippe Bugalski in fourth.
Colin McRae is lying in fifth, while Richard Burns is struggling in eighth spot.
