Stage 11: Sainz leads Australian rally

Toyota driver Carlos Sainz is in the leads the Rally of Australia, after the first full day of event.

The Spaniard, who announced yesterday he is joining the Ford team, alongside Colin McRae in 2000, leads British driver Richard Burns by just over six seconds.

Ford driver Colin McRae is lying third with a time of 1.18.11.6, ahead of world championship chaser Tommi Makinen.

The Finn, who needs to finish in the top three to clinch his fourth consecutive drivers' title, is 29 seconds behind the Scot.

Makinen's title rival Didier Auriol is already out of the rally. He retired after crashing his Toyota on Stage six.

'We were a bit unlucky with the puncture [on Stage nine],' Makinen said. 'But now of course it's easier, because Didier is out of the rally.

'We will go as fast as we can, because I would like to clear up the championship in Australia, but there are two days to go and many things can still happen.'

The rally continues tomorrow, with the drivers competing in a further eight stages.
