SS7: McRae takes the lead from Gronholm

Colin McRae and Richard Burns set a stunning pace through Hafren Sweet Lamb, one of the notorious stages on this year's event, and McRae has now taken over the lead from Marcus Gronholm, who lost around 20 secs to the pair.

The news sparked off a massive impromptu firework display as the time was relayed to the crowds close to the famous watersplash.

The two British aces were 10 seconds quicker than anyone else, showing that experience counts for a lot in the Welsh forests. It also helped that they had reasonable light before darkness fell.

McRae now has a 3.2sec lead over Gronholm, and the gap back to Burns - who must win the event to stand any chance of being World Champion - is 51.5secs. The Subaru driver is recovering positions having lost 1m06secs with suspension damage on the first stage of the day.
