SS7, Brechfa 1: Burns up to second

As darkness descended in the Welsh forests, crews tackled the longest stage of the day, the daunting 29km Brechfa 1 test, and Richard Burns showed that the prospect of cruising to the world title doesn't appeal to him

The stage took over 17mins to complete, but Subaru's Burns was just under a second slower than fastest man, and overall rally leader, Marcus Gronholm (Peugeot). Burns gained almost 19secs on fifth quickest Didier Auriol's Peugeot, which gives him second position by 6.8secs.

Gronholm now leads by 37.4secs, as he bids to end his year as reigning world champion on a high.

Auriol is now under threat by the third Peugeot of Harri Rovanpera, who is just over 12secs in arrears and was 10secs faster through the Brechfa test.

Ford's Carlos Sainz is up to fifth and was just a whisker away from the pacesetters through the stage. He blitzed ahead of Hyundai's Alister McRae, the Scot losing over 50secs to the Spaniard on SS7 alone, who holds sixth by 36.5secs over former event winner Armin Schwarz (Skoda).
