SS5: Makinen top; McRae still leads
Monte meister Tommi Makinen set his first fastest time of the event on SS5, Comps-Castellane, and inherited second overall following Petter Solberg's roll out of the event - but Ford's Colin McRae now leads by 13.5 seconds
Makinen's Mitsubishi blasted over the 20.53km stage just 6.1s faster than Carlos Sainz's Ford Focus, with the Spaniard's team mate McRae taking third.
Toni Gardemeister upheld Peugeot's tainted honour with fourth in his Grifone-entered 206 WRC and has now sneaked into the top 10, again courtesy of Solberg's demise.
A solid sixth for Richard Burns means the Subaru survivor has crept up to fourth overall after a poor start this morning.
Ford's Francois Delecour suffered a puncture, dropping over a minute to Makinen and falling to seventh overall.
