SS5, Beraking: Burns & McRae up ante

On the longest stage of the day, Brits Richard Burns and Colin McRae wrestled the momentum away from the Peugeots of Marcus Gronholm and Harri Rovanpera. Burns was fastest through the 26.46km Beraking test, but McRae moved up to second overall and is less than a second behind Rally Australia leader Gronholm

Burns' quick time of 14m52.2s was good enough to see him move to third overall on the leaderboard, a second and a half back from the reigning champion.

Didier Auriol was next up in the leading Peugeot, with Carlos Sainz fourth fastest, four seconds off Burns' pace.

Marcus Gronholm finished SS5 just behind the Spaniard, but Harri Rovanpera was the biggest loser on the stage. The Finn was sitting in second place before the Beraking test however he now finds himself back in fifth overall after setting the sixth quickest time.

Petter Solberg continues to be steady rather than spectacular, finishing seventh on the stage and lying in eighth overall. Tommi Makinen, Francois Delecour and Gilles Panizzi complete the top 10.

The rally now heads to the 19.98km Flynns Short stage before regrouping at Mundaring for service.
