SS20 cancelled as poor conditions continue

The Ponte de Lima - Este stage, the first of Leg three, has been cancelled as quagmire conditions continue to dog the Rally of Portugal, leaving Carlos Sainaz just two stages to catch overall leader Tommi Makinen

The leading duo now have just 34.41km of competitive section in which to sort out the result.

Sainz moved his Ford Focus up to just 13.0s behind leader Makinen's Mitsubishi on the last stage on leg two (SS19 was also cancelled). Their nearest challenger Marcus Gronholm is more than two minutes adrift.

Hyundai's Alister McRae has picked up a 20-second penalty for leaving the service area late this morning. The Scot made temporary repairs to his Accent WRC's fan belt on the way to Parc Ferme last night. The crew fixed the fault properly this morning, but incurred a penalty as a result. The extra time does not affect McRae's sixth place.

The field now moves directly to SS13 Ponte de Lima - Oeste, which is due to start at 0906(GMT).
