SS20, Campbell 1: Solberg fastest

Petter Solberg may have set the pace on this short stage, but Subaru's nail-biting hopes for victory took another knock by Ford star Colin McRae

The Scot continued to eat into Richard Burns' lead with just four stages to go of the Rally New Zealand. McRae was narrowly beaten into second place on the short 7.44km stage, but Solberg's English team-mate was only fifth in the order.

But McRae may run out of stages to take a dramatic win. With this stage being so short, Burns lost only a second of his lead and maintains an advantage of 16s over his rival as the tension mounts.

Francois Delecour's Ford was third quickest ahead of world champion Marcus Gronholm's Peugeot.

Carlos Sainz hit bad luck before the start of the stage when he suffered a puncture and had to make the run on the damaged rubber. Even so, he still managed to set the sixth best time thanks to the tyre's inner mousse that kept it inflated until the finish.
