SS2: Auriol leads; Burri surprises
Peugeot new recruit Didier Auriol led the Monte Carlo Rally after two special stages, but Swiss privateer Olivier Burri supplied the biggest surprise by lying second overall
Petter Solberg was fastest on SS2, St Pierre-Entrevaux, with Burri second and Auriol third. Burri, starting in the 28th slot, had already been third fastest on SS1 as the top starters 'ploughed' the satge for the later runners. It was the same again on SS2, with Alister McRae fourth in the sole remaining Hyundai after starting 15th.
Tommi Makinen and Colin McRae clawed their way back up the leaderboard, lying sixth and seventh respectively after placing seventh and fifth fastest on SS2.
