SS16, Cura Brochero: Makinen edges it from Burns

Tommi Makinen set the quickest time on the first stage of the final leg in Rally Argentina; the Mitsubishi driver just edging ahead of Subaru's Richard Burns as the teams square up for the last day of competition in Cordoba

Makinen's time of 6m43.1s through the 13.63km Cura Brochero test was just two seconds ahead of Burns, as the Englishman tries to eat into the lead of overnight leader Colin McRae.

Senor Consistency Carlos Sainz set the third quickest time in his Ford Focus WRC, with Subaru young gun Petter Solberg less than a second back in fourth.

Didier Auriol leads Peugeot's charge at the moment. The Frenchman was fifth quickest through SS16.

Kenneth Eriksson in the Hyundai was sixth with overall rally leader Colin McRae setting the seventh fastest time of the stage.

The top six positions in the overall classification remain unchanged from the end of Leg Two, however reigning world champion Marcus Gronholm has lost some time on SS16. His Peugeot continues to suffer from turbo problems and he lost over 10 seconds to the man immediately ahead of him in the rally, compatriot Tommi Makinen.

Another driver with turbo problems is Ford's Francois Delecour. The Frenchman has lost his seventh place overall in the rally to Mitsubishi's Freddy Loix after the turbo pipe fell off his Ford Focus.

The first service of the day is not until after SS17, the 20.65km El Mirador 1 test.
