SS11, Platres: Sainz again in close contest
Carlos Sainz is making the most of his running position, setting the fastest stage time on the re-run through the 11.99km Platres test, as the cars ahead of him clear the road
Sainz, fastest through the stage this morning, has clawed another five seconds from the leaders after taking his fourth stage win of the day. But just six seconds separated the top six times in the first test after service.
Richard Burns maintains his lead overall after setting the second fastest time through Platres. His advantage over Ford's Colin McRae has increased by one second to three after the Scot finished two seconds but four places behind the Subaru driver in sixth.
In between, Francois Delecour in the third Ford and Subaru's Toshihiro Arai set identical times through SS11, to finish third equal, while Freddy Loix seems to have found some of his pace following service; his Mitsubishi Carisma was fifth fastest with a time 6.3s slower than Sainz.
Another driver experiencing better fortunes on SS10 is Alister McRae. After suffering terrible mechanical problems throughout the rally, McRae finished just behind his brother in seventh, 12 seconds behind Sainz, but he's still nearly eight minutes off the lead of the rally.
Marcus Gronholm however did not have the best of times. He finished the stage 13 seconds slower than Sainz and slips ever closer to the chasing Spaniard in the overall table. Just 20 seconds separate the two as the rally heads to the re-run of the leg's longest stage the 15.73km Stavroulia test.
