Solberg eyeing victory in Italy

Former world champion Petter Solberg says he can fight for victory on this week's Rally d'Italia

The Norwegian has shied away from any such predictions this season but, having tested the Subaru Impreza WRC2007 between his last outing in Argentina and the seventh round of the WRC in Sardinia, his confidence has risen again.

Solberg said: "We can fight here properly. Fight to win, not just the podium. Not everything is right yet, but we're getting there. We have taken another step since Argentina and the car really feels good.

"Argentina did come like a big shock: where did that come from? We will be back."

Subaru has discovered Solberg's engine-related retirement in South America was due to the impact when he went off the road during the second leg.

Solberg has also welcomed the news that Subaru will field a third factory Impreza from August's Rally Finland onwards, with Xevi Pons driving it.

"He [Pons] showed good speed last year," said Solberg, "particularly in New Zealand and on the tarmac in Spain. It'll be good fun and it's good for the team because it will mean more testing and more of everything."
