Richards: WRC 'needs' McRae
WRC rights holder David Richards has insisted that the championship "needs" Colin McRae to continue driving next season, and has pledged to help the Scot find a drive for next season after current team Citroen dropped him in favour of Carlos Sainz
McRae fell victim to the new rule introduced by the FIA that limits works teams to running two cars, and his hopes of staying in the series next year appear slim, with most teams having filled their two berths. But Richards reckons that there is a "50-50" chance of McRae, arguably the WRC's most famous driver, returning next season.
"I want Colin in the championship and I am doing everything I can at the moment to try and secure him a drive," said Richards, according to Reuters. "My objective is to make sure he's in the championship for sure because he is one of the icons of the sport and we need to keep him there in the future."
The only works teams with seats remaining are Hyundai and Skoda. Another team could run McRae in a third car, but he would be ineligible to score Constructors' championship points.
