Recovering Sainz quickest on SS12

With Tommi Makinen holding the gap to 2nd placed Didier Auriol at a secure one minute & fifteen seconds, the excitement in the New Zealand Rally is coming from the battle for lower points placings

Juha Kankkunen is within striking distance of Auriol but making little impression, while Toni Gardemeister's amazing 4th place looks secure at present. Behind him, local hero Possum Bourne is under pressure from the recovering Thomas Radstrom and Carlos Sainz, the latter setting the fastest time on the Brooks stage.

Another driver putting in a recovery drive is Freddy Loix, who dropped down the order after a windscreen wiper failure left him driving blind yesterday. He is now 13th, behind Hamed Al Waihibi and Masao Kataoka.
