Rally Oz: One stage to go...
With just one stage to go in Australia it seems that Tommi Makinen has brought himself back into the title race for the championship showdown in Rally GB later this month
Makinen is now seemingly out of reach at the head of the field, 7.8s clear of Marcus Gronholm, but Richard Burns is just 0.9s behind the Peugeot driver in the battle for second place! The final stage is a short television stage at 2.73km, too short to catch Makinen but destined to see a screaming battle between the two main title rivals...
"I'm going to find that extra second or I'm going to put the car into the trees," said Burns, "because there is no way that I'm going to Rally GB and having to rely on some one else."
If these positions remain Gronholm would lead the championship with 55 points from Burns on 48 and Makinen 42. To win the championship Burns would need to win the Rally GB with Gronholm no higher than fourth (the tie-break would then favour Burns). Peugeot will lead the championship with 99 points, Ford second on 88 and Subaru third with 74. Only Peugeot and Ford could then win the championship.
