Rally Ireland to join WRC calendar

Rally Ireland organisers said on Wednesday that their event will join the World Rally Championship next year

The FIA World Motor Sport Council is meeting today to ratify or reject proposals from all areas of the sport, including determining which candidate events will join the WRC.

Rally Ireland 2006 was one of six candidate countries seeking a place in the WRC. The other countries are Norway, Jordan, South Africa, Portugal and Poland.

A Rally Ireland representative observed today's meeting, hence organisers released their confirmation statement ahead of the official FIA meeting summary.

The event is scheduled to be held on November 18-20 as part of the 2007/08 WRC season.

After a shorter 2007 season, the WRC switches over to a 'winter' season, running from summer 2007 until Spring 2008.

Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, the Rt. Hon. Peter Hain MP said: "As a motorsport fan, I am delighted with this decision made by Max Mosley and the FIA.

"Having seen at close hand the impact that Rally Ireland has made to date, I am excited by what hosting a full WRC round will be able to contribute to the economy and the development of social cohesion."
