Rally Great Britain route changed

The route for December's Rally Great Britain, the final round of the World Rally Championship, has been revealed - and it includes major changes to one of the three days

The opening day (Friday, December 5) of the event will take the competitors further north in Wales than they have been for the last five years. The competitive action will include the hugely popular Sweet Lamb stage, where fans have packed in their tens of thousands in previous years.

While the event starts and finishes in Cardiff, the first day's action will actually start from Llandrindod Wells, following a ceremonial start in the Welsh capital on Thursday evening.

Central service remains in Swansea for the duration of the rally, but there will be a remote tyre zone close to Rhayader.

Also new for the opening leg will be a brace of spectator stages run in quick succession through the purpose-built Walters Arena section of Rheola forest. This is an effort from the organisers to divert some of the spectators away from the three mid-Wales stages - which has been the scene of some horrendous congestion in the past.

The opening day's return comes at the cost of the Trawscoed and Brechfa stages, but the rest of the route remains in largely unchanged form. There will be a superspecial stage, as usual, in the Millennium Stadium on Saturday night and the event headquarters also remains in the home of Welsh rugby.

The schedule remains unconfirmed until it has been agreed with the World Rally Championship manufacturers and the sport's governing body, the FIA. The itinerary for the Rally Great Britain is:
