Rally GB waits on report

Great Britain's rally is still on the latest FIA World Rally Championship calendar for 2004. The event in Wales has kept its September date - but there are conditions.

The final schedule for 2004 was announced in Monaco today (Friday) and features just one question mark - and it's next to Britain's date. The precise wording is that the rally is "subject to the receipt of a satisfactory report regarding the safety of roads in South Wales."

The problems began when several drivers were given fines and bans last month for speeding offences on the 2002 event. With headlines also going to police presence on the road sections of this year's rally, there were fears about the event's safety and the promise of an FIA discussion at today's meeting.

But it appears that the governing body does not yet have sufficient information on which to act. The rally's status will have to be confirmed at a later date.

The only other changes from the previous event list released in October are for the Acropolis Rally and Rally Argentina. The Greek event will be a week later, on 4-6 June, and Argentina moves from mid-June to mid-July.

The Argentina switch gets the rally away from a weekend that has already got the Le Mans 24 Hours and the Canadian Grand Prix.
